The Welsh Women’s Peace Petition 1924, coordinated by the Welsh League of Nations Union, was signed by 390,296 women in a call for America to join and lead the League of Nations, to prevent the outbreak of another war in the aftermath of World War One.
The petition was transported to America by four women including Annie Griffiths, who wrote a diary documenting her experiences. A century later, the chest along with the petition was returned to Wales and is now on display at the National Library of Wales.
In 2025, Corwen Museum launched a special exhibition to commemorate this initiative and the story behind it, as well as the stories of some of the local women who signed the petition. Two museum volunteers, Mike Plaice and Dilwyn Jones created a replica of the original chest sent to America containing the boxes of signatures, and it now forms part of the Welsh Women’s Peace Petition display in our museum.
