On September 1^{st<\/sup> this year we mark the beginning of\nWorld War 2 in 1939.  Here in North Wales\nit was a fine, sunny morning, but the future was to be far from sunny. Often\npeople had to hide away from bomb blasts in specially constructed underground\nshelters, half buried in the ground with earth heaped on top.  Sometimes built in peoples\u2019 back gardens, and\nnamed after their designer, they were known as \u2018Anderson Shelters\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n}

They were made from six corrugated iron sheets bolted\ntogether at the top, with steel plates at either end, and measured 6ft 6in by\n4ft 6in. They were\nvery effective at saving lives and\npreventing major injuries during air raids, but they were really cold during\nthe winter months. Designed for six people, they were free to those with an annual income\nof less than \u00a3250, (The average salary at that time was \u00a3200.) For those who\ndidn\u2019t fall into this category, the price was \u00a37.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n
